Tricks for the Uniden-built/RS Pro-26 Scanner

SFT Arrow (while radio's already on): to use arrows in Manual mode to change channels up or down

Hold the following buttons down while turning on scanner:

AUTO: enables/disables 100cps scan rate (enables/disables Auto Sorting)

DELAY: toggles between 2 and 4 sec delay

KL: turns Beep on or off

2,9: erases memories

2,9 SFT checks all elements of display WITHOUT erasing memories

2,9 KL displays firmware version (ie 6b4H USA 1.00) WITHOUT erasing memories

2,9 MAN or 2,9 MON or 2,9 CLR or 2,9 PGM loads one set of test freqs into channels 1-18.

2,9 MAN or 2,9 MON loads in 53-53.3MHz into the Limit Search

2,9 CLR loads in 511.5-511.9875 & 517.75MHz into the Limit Search

2,9 PGM loads in 173-173.3MHz into the Limit Search

2,9 AUTO or 2,9 L/O loads in a second set of test freqs into channels 1-14 and channels 21-30, while locking out channels 31-40. Both limits of the Limit Search are 529.75MHz.

Now that that's out of the way...

  • 1. Remove Battery Pack.
  • 2. Remove four cover screws (Figure 1). Gently Pry at areas indicated in Figure 1 with a small, flathead screwdriver in order to loosen the battery compartment latches. Now gently squeeze sides of the case to loosen back cover.
  • 3. Disconnect speaker terminal indicated (Figure 2). Gently Pry the main board away from the connector as indicated in Figure 2.
  • 4. Turn main board over. Note the IC Chip (IC 1) to jumper as indicated in Figure 3.
  • 5. USING A GROUNDED SOLDERING IRON!!! Solder a small wire from Pin 12 to pin 14 (Figure 4). I found it best to put some solder on the wire ends first, then touch the end of the wire to the pin, while heating the wire with the tip of the soldering iron.
  • 6. Reassemble unit (don't forget to connect the speaker!).
  • 7. Turn on unit. Everything works great, right? Now set to auto scan, with 360.2375 as lower limit, and 385.1625 as upper limit. Press SHIFT and change mode to NFM, then change step rate to 5.
  • 8. Listen to your new channels.

Please EMail me and let me know how this works out for you. As you can see from the illustrations,

PRO-26 discriminator output for POCSAG decos

If you want decode PAGER signals, Mobile Data Terminals? you need a clean audio out which isnt filtered by your scanner's speaker.
This is the discriminator output for the Radio Shack PRO-26 scanner.

Get a mono 1/8" jack this is where your HAMCOMM interface will plug into. Get two 3 inch pieces of 30 gauge hookup wire. Take the back cover off the scanner.. Watch out, it's snapped pretty tight where the batteries go, pry it out at your own risk..
Turn the scanner so the knobs are aiming for you. See where the red/black wire connects the speaker?. Look 1.5 inches to the right and find a chip marked RCL 20930 A24. It's a 24 pin chip.. See the circular indent under the RCL logo? that's pin 1. The pin on the far right is 12, which is to the bottom right of the number A24. DO NOT USE lots of solder... you'll only bridge all the pins together.

Carefully, solder one of those short wires to pin 12, don't hold the iron there for more then a second or two. blow on the connection right after you take the iron away..

Next take the other end of that wire and solder it to the center contact on that 1/8 jack you got.
Then solder one end of the other short wire to the silver square, located 1/4 inch to the top/right of this chip. solder the other end to the ground of your 1/8 jack. See the minty green pots, one for Squelch, the other for volume?. I mounted my 1/8 jack out of the RIGHT side of the scanner (opposite side of the charging jacks, and about an inch higher then the charging jacks. Just make sure when you drill the hole the install the jack.. when you close the case it doesn't interfere with any other parts.. you don't want to crush anything.

This works great.. I had real fun seeing pages come across my laptop screen, BEFORE my pager actually decoded them. Look for HAMCOMM, POCSAG, and DISCRIMINATOR for more tips/help
